The firewall cards onboard RISC processor operates independently of its host system and is practically impervious to Internet attacks, user actions, or malicious code. Equally important, each firewall client is configurable only through authenticated policy servers. In other words, even if a firewall-client device is invaded, its practically impossible to exploit that system as an attack launching pad. Because fiber-optic cabling doesn emit radio waves, fiber connections are inherently more secure and efficient than copper wiring. 3Coms fiber-compatible, PCI-bus card is ideal for locations exposed to electrical interference or for time-sensitive converged transmissions, such as voice and video. The firewall card plugs into the PCI slot of a 100BaseFX-compatible PC, replacing the conventional Fast Ethernet LAN connection. In Windows XP or 2000 environments, TCP and security tasks are offloaded to the cards security processor, helping boost system performance.
